   Chart 3: Total Employment, 1969-1999

Chart 3 highlights employment in Johnson County. Employment is one of the most commonly used measures of health in a community. It gives a quick snap shot of the percentage of the population working and whether more or less jobs are available   over time. The chart above shows "total employment" which includes both full and part-time jobs. Total employment has been slowly ratcheting upwards in the past 31 years with growth occurring during the early 1970's and in the 1990's and plateaus in between. Overall job growth during the period was 83% or 2.8% annually. This compares with the statewide value of 104% or 3.2% annually

Chart 4: Population, 1969-1999

Chart 4 shows the population for Johnson county. Population peaked in 1983 at 7200 residents then declined slightly until 1989. In the 1990's, the population has increased to 6,858 residents in 1999. Overall, Johnson county population grew 24.0% or 0.77% annually for the period covered.
